For Physicians

Odyssey Health Services views all of the clinical problems that we assess and treat from a comprehensive, biopsychosocial perspective.  Depending on the presenting problem(s) and the duration of those problems, the recommended intervention may range from several sessions of office-based counselling to several months of interdisciplinary treatment that may include intensive intervention that takes place in the individual’s home and community.

When the  biomedical aspect of the problem is being well managed and what is required is behavioural or cognitive behavioural intervention for the psychological/psychosocial/behavioural factors, then office based counselling utilizing elements such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Behavioural Activation and job readiness may be recommended.

The effectiveness of Behavioural Activation and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) for depression and anxiety has been shown to be equal to, or in some cases superior to, medication.   In addition, CBT has been shown to enhance the effectiveness of medication in more severe cases and to help prevent relapse.  CBT together with graded exercise is the only intervention with scientifically demonstrated effectiveness for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and has also been shown to be effective for Fibromyalgia, headache and other chronic pain syndromes.

More complex or prolonged problems may require that a complete interdisciplinary diagnostic formulation is developed that includes identification of biomedical, psychological and psychosocial factors that are contributing to an individual’s suffering and dysfunction.   The integration of medical sciences with behavioural science is well supported by current empirical research for the assessment and treatment of:

  • chronic pain syndromes,
  • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome,
  • Fibromyalgia,
  • chronic mood and anxiety disorders,
  • other complex or difficult to manage circumstances.

The unique and highly successful model of treatment utilized by Odyssey Health Services is described in a study of the treatment of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome published in The American Journal of Medicine, in September 1998.

Some of your patients will have been referred by a disability insurer or employer.  In these cases we obtain your patient’s written consent to communicate with you directly.  We accept referrals to our CBT Counselling Services directly from physicians.  Access to this service is simple and quick.  From the moment that you make the referral, we can typically offer the first appointment within 5 business days.

CBT Counselling Services are not covered by OHIP but many patients may have extended health care benefits that would cover some or all of the costs.
